Allium sativum This garlic variety hails from Italy, boasts a sweet yet mild flavor profile, and produces medium and large bulbs that nicely fill out a garlic braid. Due to its mild, authentic garlic flavor, Italian is a long-time favorite of gardeners and chefs. The heads yield large outer cloves, which are easy to peel and, once peeled, reveal cloves with a lavender tint. This is another super variety for braiding and displaying in the kitchen. Italian tends to harvest earlier than other varieties if you are growing garlic and are interested in a staggered harvest. Early Italian averages 8-14 cloves per bulb and 5-10 bulbs per pound. Storage instructions: Keep your garlic bulbs in a paper bag in a cool, dark, dry place until you are ready to plant it. The ideal storage temperature is 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Air needs to circulate freely around the bag. Do not store garlic in the refrigerator. Sowing instructions: Garlic is best sown in the fall after the first frost of the season. Wait until just before planting to separate the bulbs into cloves. Plant the clove with the pointed end facing up. We recommend mulching your garlic bed with a light layer of leaves or straw to help with weed suppression and overwintering.
