Koa loves riding small boards on the North Shore’s smaller days, but we needed to add volume to make them functional and provide power and stability while paddling. We scaled down Koa’s 5'9" Ghost to a 5'5"; to increase buoyancy, we widened the board, flattened the deck, and made the rails thicker and boxier. We also added a modern "beak" nose to keep more foam under the chest area and extending toward the tip. The added volume is significant: a 5'10" Ghost XL has 28.80 liters of volume, whereas a 5'7" Mini Ghost has 28.70 liters. We made slight rocker adjustments and offer the board with either a round tail or a wider squash tail, making it incredibly fun in small, weak surf. Overall, the best way to describe it is as a board with an 80s retro aesthetic but all the performance characteristics of a modern design. It is built for high-performance surfing but is also great for less experienced surfers, thanks to the extra volume and a more forgiving ride.
