Unknown Basque Whistle/Tabor Pipe Combo

A curious and versatile Basque instrument that serves as both a whistle and a tabor pipe. Its pitch sits closest to D, running a touch sharp of it, and the tuning gives it a genuinely unusual character. Played as a whistle it climbs a melodic minor scale with a raised, major seventh on the way up, and a little cross fingering will flatten that seventh to a minor seventh on the way back down, for a distinctive and slightly haunting voice you will not get from a standard whistle.What sets it apart mechanically is a telescopic section that closes off the notes normally covered by the left hand. With those sealed, the instrument becomes a three-hole tabor pipe, played one-handed while the other keeps rhythm on a drum. The maker is unknown.
