Gaintza Txakolina, DO Getariako Txakolina

A great alternative to Vinho Verde, from the cool, green, Basque region. Zippy and spritzy, with plenty of citrus zest, orchard fruit, sea spray, and lots of minerality. Finishing dry with lip-smacking acidity. The Lazkano family own 25 hectares of vineyards in Getaria and have been producing Txakoli for four generations. Grandfather José Antonio used to make wine at home for family consumption and to sell locally, until the Gaintza cellar was set up in 1923. The estate comprises a mix of older planting on high pergolas and newer terraced plantings. They mainly grow Hondarribi Zuri, the most common and traditional grape in Txakoli production, supplemented by the rare red varietal Hondarribi Beltz and some Chardonnay.
