Trimbow tackles the problem from three angles at once, which is why it is called triple therapy. Steroid (ICS) Beclometasone An inhaled corticosteroid that calms the underlying inflammation and swelling inside the airways, helping to prevent flare-ups over time. Long-acting reliever (LABA) Formoterol Relaxes the muscle around the airways to keep them open. It starts working within a few minutes and lasts around 12 hours. Airway opener (LAMA) Glycopyrronium Blocks a separate nerve signal that tightens the airways, giving a second, longer-lasting way of keeping them relaxed and open. Trimbow uses an extrafine formulation — the mist particles are very small (around 1.1 micrometres), which helps the medicine reach deeper into the small airways of the lungs. Because two of the three ingredients are long-acting, Trimbow is taken as a regular daily preventer, not for on-the-spot symptom relief. Take it every day, even when you feel well. This is also the maximum dose; do not take extra puffs. Using the inhaler correctly Before the very first use, prime the inhaler by releasing one puff into the air. Sit or stand upright, remove the cap and check the mouthpiece is clean. Breathe out gently and fully, away from the inhaler. Put the mouthpiece between your teeth, close your lips, and start to breathe in slowly and deeply — pressing the canister as you begin to breathe in. Hold your breath for as long as is comfortable, then breathe out slowly (not into the inhaler). Wait about 30 seconds, then repeat for the second puff. Replace the cap afterwards. Rinse your mouth with water (don’t swallow it) or brush your teeth to lower the risk of oral thrush and hoarseness. Not a reliever Trimbow won’t stop a sudden attack. Always keep your fast-acting reliever inhaler for immediate symptoms. Don’t stop suddenly Keep taking Trimbow as prescribed. If it feels less effective, don’t stop — speak to a prescriber or GP. Storage Store new inhalers in the fridge (2–8°C) before use. Once in use, keep at room temperature. Trimbow is a daily maintenance inhaler. The 87/5/9 strength is licensed for both asthma and COPD in adults; the 172/5/9 strength is licensed for asthma only. It helps control symptoms and reduce flare-ups — it is not for sudden relief. What’s the difference between Trimbow 87/5/9 and 172/5/9? Both contain the same three medicines at the same twice-daily dose. The 87/5/9 has a medium dose of inhaled steroid and is used for asthma or COPD; the 172/5/9 has a high dose of inhaled steroid and is used for asthma only. Your prescriber decides which is right for you. Is Trimbow a steroid inhaler? It contains an inhaled steroid (beclometasone) as one of three ingredients, alongside two long-acting bronchodilators (formoterol and glycopyrronium). So it’s a combination “triple therapy” inhaler rather than a steroid-only preventer. Can I use Trimbow as a reliever? No. Trimbow is a preventer taken on a regular schedule. It won’t relieve a sudden attack — always keep and use your fast-acting reliever inhaler for immediate symptoms. How many puffs of Trimbow do I take a day? The usual dose is two puffs twice a day (morning and evening) — four puffs in total. That is also the maximum; don’t take extra. Take it every day, even when you feel well. Do I need to rinse my mouth after using Trimbow? Yes — rinsing your mouth with water (without swallowing) or brushing your teeth after your dose lowers the risk of oral thrush and a hoarse voice from the steroid. Can children use Trimbow?
