Fine Writing International (尚羽堂) is a pen atelier based in Taiwan. They took the generous size of classic 1920s–1950s vintage Japanese Eyedropper ebonite pen and gave it a finish you can feel as well as see. The finish: Ishime Nuri (石目塗) Ishime means "stone grain." It's one of the most tactile urushi finishes there is. Urushi is a natural lacquer made from tree sap, and it’s built up by hand in layers over a course of several months. To get the ishime texture, dry lacquer grounds and metal powder are applied onto the wet urushi surface and settles into an uneven, stone-like surface as it cures. The result is a matte, dry-feeling finish in deep red. It catches the light differently from every angle and grips your fingers without feeling rough.
