Ancient Rings

Opening with the brilliant ringing sounds of mallet instruments, the opening 7/8 rhythms pulse with energy and compelling harmonies. A transition in tempo brings a moment of reflection, led by the delicate textures of the bells, vibraphone, and triangle. This ethereal moment gives way to a rich, dark, and deeply passionate lyrical section. As this emotional intensity subsides, the full force of the opening theme returns, propelling the entire ensemble toward a triumphant and powerful conclusion. While the title Ancient Rings might initially evoke images of megalithic stone monuments like Stonehenge, the resonance of medieval church bells, or a simple band of metal jewelry, this work draws its inspiration from a completely different kind of artifact: tree rings. Commissioned by the Alachua County Middle School Honors Band in Gainesville, Florida—an official "Tree City" and home to legendary ancient trees like the 200-year-old Cellon Oak—this piece treats the concentric circles of a cut tree trunk as a botanical time capsule. Because these rings record centuries of changing climates, seasonal shifts, and atmospheric conditions, they offer a living history of our world. Ancient Rings musically imagines the hidden stories these ancient giants might tell if they could speak.
