ReCinder x Shem Morgan - Large Decanter with Cinched Neck RC–01–1C

The Large Decanter with Cinched Neck reinterprets the proportions of ancient Roman vessels in ReCinder, drawing on ceramic sherds dating approximately from AD 40–150 and discovered in Highgate Wood. Handmade by London-based sculptor and ceramicist Shem Morgan, its elongated silhouette combines a broad, gently rounded body with a narrow base and pronounced cinched neck, opening into a wide rim. The form translates the economy and functionality of historical vessels into a distinctly contemporary object. The exterior is burnished by hand using a smooth river stone, compressing and smoothing the surface while preserving ReCinder’s distinctive sandstone-like character. Natural inclusions and subtle variations remain visible throughout, making each vessel individual and inherently collectable. Single-fired and left unglazed, the decanter eliminates the second firing conventionally required for glazed ceramics. Instead, it is saturated with beeswax to seal the ceramic body while allowing the texture, inclusions and character of ReCinder to remain exposed. Part of The Highgate Collection, the decanter is made in Highgate from ReCinder produced using ceramic waste also sourced from studios in Highgate – creating an ultra-local connection between material, maker and place.
