Black Convict (Amatitlania nigrofasciata)

The Black Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) is a Central American cichlid recognized by its distinctive black vertical bars over a gray/black body. Males typically grow larger (up to 6 inches) and may develop longer fins and a more pronounced forehead as they mature, while females often display orange coloration along the belly and sides. Convict Cichlids are active, territorial fish with the bold personality typical of Central American cichlids. They can become especially aggressive when spawning and should be provided with adequate space, caves, rocks, and other structures that allow them to establish territories.
