Vintage Chinese Four-Panel Painted Architectural Screen

Made in China circa 1980, this four-panel folding screen presents an imaginative European palazzo through a monumental arcaded loggia. The continuous scene creates theatrical depth across the hinged panels. The surface is worked in low relief, giving physical definition to the building’s columns, windows, balustrades and ornament. Painted sections in pale blue, coral red, black and cream punctuate the predominantly bronze, gold and softly silvered palette. Black architectural accents sharpen the composition, while stylized winged creatures, urns, flowering shrubs and a suspended lantern introduce an imaginative decorative quality. Measuring 84 inches high and 80 inches wide when extended, it works as a room divider, freestanding architectural feature or dramatic backdrop.
