'Liminal Sculptural Frame' by Crossing Threads 415mm wide x 415mm height, 60mm frame depth, sculptural depth 80mm GOTS-Certified Egyptian cotton, Fair Trade Hemp, paint, linen, stained walnut ‘LIMINAL’ by Crossing Threads explores the space between textile and object, transforming a traditionally soft, flat-woven surface into something sculptural, dimensional, and alive. Handwoven through the Japanese philosophy of SAORI free-weaving, lengths of reedless textile are folded, gathered and compressed within a deep stained walnut frame. Softness meets structure as the textile pushes forward, recedes, and folds back upon itself, with the frame acting as both a boundary and a vessel. Periwinkle holds the work in a liminal state, a colour belonging neither entirely to day nor night, but to the fleeting moments between an ending and a beginning. Open warp channels reveal glimpses of what lies beneath, while denser passages disappear into folds and shadow. No longer simply woven cloth, ‘LIMINAL’ becomes volume, surface and object, occupying the threshold between weaving and sculpture. ABOUT CROSSING THREADS Lauren and Kass Hernandez are Australian-born artists and sisters of Filipino heritage based on Wangal and Gadigal Land in Sydney. Working collaboratively as Crossing Threads®, their practice explores the intersection of art, design and object through handweaving, material experimentation and sculptural form. Known for their large-scale, highly textural pieces, the Hernandez sisters have developed a distinct visual language spanning tapestries, wall-based works, soft sculpture and framed textiles. Their creative direction is now expanding beyond the wall and into the spatial realm, translating the tactility and hand of weaving into furniture, functional objects, and site-responsive interventions.
