Food grade diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made from fossilized freshwater diatoms, and its uses around goats are almost too many to list. Mixed into feed, it acts as an anti-caking agent that keeps things flowing and mold-free. Dusted in bedding or along barn edges, it helps manage moisture and unwanted crawlers. Many goat keepers consider it a basic part of their mineral and feed routine. Why source matters: Not all DE is the same. This is fresh water diatomaceous earth from a mountain deposit, where the diatoms fossilized with their tubular structure intact. That shape is what makes it work. Salt water DE contains a mix of fragile diatom species that break apart and perform poorly. Darker colored DE often indicates excess iron or high clay content. Quality DE is light in color and consistently fine. Amorphous vs. crystalline silica: This product contains less than half of one percent crystalline silica. Crystalline silica (the kind used in pool filters) forms through extreme heat and is dangerous to inhale. Amorphous silica is the naturally occurring form and is not a respiratory hazard when handled with normal care, though you should still avoid breathing clouds of any fine powder. Suggested use: Mix into feed at up to 2% of dry weight (roughly 2 pounds per 100 pounds of feed). Can also be used as a dusting powder in coops, barns, and bedding areas. Pure food grade diatomaceous earth. No fillers, additives, or additional ingredients. Packaged in FDA/USDA compliant food-grade resealable zipper bags.
