Matchawan Tsuki (Japanese moon) is a traditional vessel for preparing and drinking matcha. It catches the eye with its irregular grooves and gray color, which resemble the moon, hence the name of the bowl. Japan even celebrates the autumn moon contemplation festival – “Tsukimi”. It almost always takes place in September, as this month is considered the best for moon watching. For the Japanese, Tsukimi is not only about admiring the moon, but also a unique opportunity to meet and spend time with family and friends. During the festival, food called „tsukimi ryori” and matcha tea play an important role. Eating them during this time is believed to bring good luck. Preparing matcha in a bowl The traditional method of preparing matcha tea comes from the Japanese tea ceremony. It requires a matchawan bowl, a bamboo chasen whisk, and a bamboo chashaku spoon. Pour two bamboo teaspoons of matcha (1.5g) into the matchawan, pour in approx. 100 ml of hot water (80 °C), so that the bottom of the bowl is completely covered with water. Then stir the chasen vigorously, using M-like movements, until a thick light green foam forms on the surface. It takes less than 30 seconds. Then add more water depending on how strong you like your tea. Watch Moya Matcha founder Hitomi Saito prepare matcha tea in a traditional way – video
