Broad Bean ‘Evergreen’
Botanical Name: Vicia faba Lifecycle: Annual Heritage: NZ ‘Evergreen’ is a wonderful Broad Bean producing an abundance of mild flavoured beans that retain their colour when cooked. It typically has smaller beans than other Broad Bean varieties. It grows to approx. 90cm making it great for smaller garden spaces and exposed windier sites. A fantastic variety for beginner gardeners. Broad Beans prefer to grow over the cooler months of the year. They can be eaten raw and have more sweet flavour when the pods are young and tender. They're delicious stir fried with garlic and/or diced chilli. Suitable for deep freezing. Picking regularly will encourage further growth and extend your harvest. Broad Beans are also known as Fava Beans. SOWING: Autumn - Spring Direct, or Transplant Broad Beans are best sown in autumn through spring. Seeds can be sown in trays for transplanting, or directly in place approx. 15 – 20cm apart when soil temperatures are between 7°c – 20°c. 7°c - 20°c 7 - 14 days Transplant tray grown seedlings, or thin directly sown seeds, to a final spacing of approx. 15cm – 20cm apart once plants have a few true leaves. 15cm - 20cm 75 - 100 days Hardy TIPS: Easy to grow from seed making it perfect for beginners and children. Grows best in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. These plants are low maintenance and productive. Once it starts producing pick regularly (e.g. every few days) to prolong flowering and your harvests. Always remain vigilant for hungry slugs, snails and caterpillars.
