I wanted the tree to feel busy and alive — branches crossing over each other, birds appearing and disappearing into the surface, small movements hidden inside the paint. The rough texture and tangled lines are left visible, allowing the painting to keep some of its restlessness rather than becoming too polished. Sparrows are small ordinary birds, easy to overlook, yet tough enough to stay through the winter months when many others disappear. Painted on stretched canvas.
