About Māia Māia Keane is a ringatoi Māori descending from the first place to see the sun, Te Tairāwhiti, āe mārika. She was born & raised in West Auckland, recently returning to her whānau whare here in Tāmaki after 6 years of deep wānanga on the dearest East Coast. Her art practice moves across painting, raranga, and whatu, drawing from Toi Māori ideaologies and the pūrākau through taonga tuku iho. Raised away from her tūrangawaewae, Māia’s work reflects an ongoing return. To people, to place, and to ways of making and expressing oneself. She often works with kōwhaiwhai and the materials of harakeke and muka, following what they have to teach rather than trying to control them. At the heart of her mahi is a love for making alongside and sharing experiences with others. Most of her time is now dedicated to being a kaiako, returning to rangatahi pathways that once shaped her too.
