HMS Jupiter F60 Leander Class Frigate September 1985 Port Side Photo Print

HMS Jupiter (F60), a Royal Navy Leander Class frigate, steams across the Indian Ocean on 26 September 1985, seen side on from almost sea level with her port side towards the camera and her bow to the left. Her ship’s company line the rails from the forecastle to the flight deck, many of them picked out in bright orange. Forward are her missile launchers, and amidships stand her mast with its radar aerial and her single broad funnel. A second mast flies the White Ensign, and a short white wake runs from her stern across the pale, hazy sea. As in the rest of this series, no pennant number is painted on her hull. Jupiter had seen her share of unusual duties before this deployment. During the Cod War of 1973 she and her Wasp helicopter went to help the trawler Everton after the Icelandic gunboat Ægir opened fire on it. She also had a part in television history, appearing as the fictional HMS Hero in the BBC drama series Warship in the 1970s, although her sister HMS Phoebe was the main ship used for filming. In 1985 she was in the region on the Armilla Patrol, in company with the destroyer HMS Exeter.
