What it feels like to use You are held, not floated. A seat that is too wide is not a comfortable seat. You drift to one side, your pelvis rotates, and the backrest stops meeting your spine where it was designed to. At 16 in the S actually contains you, which is what makes the posture support work. Your feet reach the floor. The frame sits closer to the ground than the standard Comfort. If you propel with your feet as well as your hands, or if you simply want to stand up without launching yourself, that lower seat is the whole difference. It is the lightest chair we make. 15.0 lb as a bare frame, and the reason the S ends up in a lot of car trunks. It goes where the standard chair does not. 25 in wide unfolded, against 27.5 in for the Comfort M. Narrow bathroom doors and older apartment hallways stop being a calculation. The backrest A flat back panel pushes your lower spine backwards into a C. Your pelvis tilts, your head comes forward to compensate, and your diaphragm loses room to work. That is why sitting still gets tiring. The S carries the same frame-integrated backrest as the rest of the Comfort family, engineered to the smaller frame. It is shaped, not flat, and the curve is part of the frame rather than a cushion added afterwards. It fills the hollow of your lower back so your pelvis stays upright and your shoulders stay back. The Comfort won a German Design Award in 2018 and a Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum in 2023. How the adjustment works. The backrest panel is held by wide hook-and-loop straps. You set the tension at any height along the back and to any firmness, so the support meets your own lumbar curve rather than an average one. The adjustment works across a range of −10 to +20 degrees. The curve itself is built into the frame; what you are setting is how firmly, and where, it meets you. Rated for users up to 300 lb The smaller frame does not mean a smaller rating. The aluminum frame is rated for users up to 300 lb / 136 kg, tested to ISO 7176-15 for static, impact and fatigue loading. Static stability is at least 7 degrees, the reference test being ISO 7176-1. The frame carries a 5-year warranty. Made for transfers and tight spaces The footrests swing away and come off by hand, so nothing sits between you and a bed, sofa or car seat during a transfer. The desk-length armrests are shortened at the front, which lets the chair pull right up to a table or kitchen counter instead of stopping at the edge. Integral clothing guards keep fabric clear of the wheels. Combined with the lower seat height, a transfer to a bed or a car seat is a shorter move than it is from a standard-height chair. Frequently asked questions Is the Strongback Comfort S right for me, or do I need the standard Comfort? The Strongback Comfort S is the right chair if your seated hip width measures under 15 in. Measure the widest point across your hips and thighs while seated. Over 15 in and you want the Strongback Comfort M at 18 in. If you land right on the line, go up: a slightly wide seat is comfortable, a slightly narrow one is not. What makes the Strongback Comfort S different from other small wheelchairs? The Strongback Comfort S is a genuinely smaller frame rather than a standard chair with the seat pulled in. Most narrow wheelchairs keep the seat high and leave the backrest unchanged. The Comfort S has a 16 in seat, 22 in rear wheels rather than 24, and a seat that sits closer to the ground so the feet reach the floor, and it carries the same patented frame-integrated Strongback backrest as the full-size Comfort. How much does the Strongback Comfort S weigh? The Strongback Comfort S has two published weights, and we label both. Its Weight, the bare frame without footrests, wheels and anti-tippers, is 15.0 lb, which is the lightest in our range and what goes into the trunk. How much smaller is the Strongback Comfort S than the Comfort M? The Strongback Comfort S is two inches narrower at the seat than the Comfort M and runs 22 in rear wheels instead of 24. Unfolded it is 25 in wide against 27.5 in for the M, which is what gets it through narrow bathroom doors and older apartment hallways. The frame also sits closer to the ground, which is what brings the feet to the floor. Is the backrest on the Strongback Comfort S adjustable? The Strongback Comfort S backrest adjusts by hook-and-loop strap tension. Every Strongback has a push-to-lock parking brake at each rear wheel as standard. If you need Attendant Brakes so a caregiver can apply the brake without bending down, they are standard on the Strongback Comfort M and L. Is the Strongback Comfort S a wheelchair or a transport chair? The Strongback Comfort S is a wheelchair. Its 22 in rear wheels carry hand rims sized for you to propel yourself, and an attendant can push as well. A transport chair has small rear wheels, no hand rims, and only moves when someone pushes it. If you will always be pushed, look at the Strongback Excursion instead. What weight capacity does the Strongback Comfort S support? The Strongback Comfort S is rated to 300 lb / 136 kg, tested to ISO 7176-15. The smaller frame does not mean a smaller rating: it is the same capacity as the full-size Comfort. Choose a capacity that sits above your weight with margin rather than at it.
