January Handbuilding Figurative Forms with Margaret Meehan

Join visual artist Margaret Meehan as we explore the art of creating expressive figurative forms through a blend of handbuilding techniques. Margaret will guide participants through the process of making small maquettes – clay “sketches” that allow for experimentation with proportion, gesture, and composition before committing to a final piece. From there, students will bring their sculptures to life using methods such as coiling and solid building with hollowing, refining their understanding of form and structure. Demonstrations will cover techniques for carving and adding intricate surface details to evoke textures like fur, feathers, and fabric, helping you infuse your figures with realism, character, and narrative presence. We recommend having at least one month of handbuilding experience before taking this class. Please read "Class Details" for more information related to the course prior to registration. To get the most out of this class, you should feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in the four week Beginning Handbuilding course, and can confidently reliably wedge, coil and pinch. In addition to the weekly class meetings, we have open hours seven days a week for you to come in and work on your own. Continuing Handbuilding students should bring their own clay and tools. We have a supply shop at the studio where you can purchase these things if you need them. The course fee includes firing and access to studio glazes. Our FAQ page contains more information. Policies By enrolling in a class or workshop, you are acknowledging that you have read and understand the safety instructions and liability waiver. Cancellations made 4 or more days before the start of the class will be refunded. For cancellations made fewer than 4 full days, but more than 24 hours before the start time, a 50% refund or 50% credit toward another class or workshop will be issued. We cannot provide refunds or credits for cancellations or rescheduling requests made fewer than 24 hours before class starts, if you miss class, or arrive too late to participate.
