The Fifth Column & The First Forty-Nine

Published in 1938, this collection combines Ernest Hemingway's only full-length play with forty-nine of his short stories. The play, The Fifth Column, is set during the Spanish Civil War and follows an American counter-espionage agent working under cover as a journalist in a besieged Madrid hotel. The accompanying stories include some of his most prominent short fiction, such as The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, and The Killers.
