The story of the Heuer Autavia is one of evolution—from dashboard instruments to the wrist—spanning decades of motorsport and aviation heritage. Its name itself, a contraction of AUTomobile and AVIAtion, already hints at its purpose. First introduced in 1933 as a dashboard timer, the Autavia was designed for both sectors. It wasn’t until 1962 that Jack Heuer reimagined it as a wristwatch chronograph—marking the beginning of one of Heuer’s most iconic lines. From there, it quickly became associated with the golden era of Formula 1, worn by drivers such as Jo Siffert, Mario Andretti, and Gilles Villeneuve. The example offered here is a late 1960s reference 7763C, housed in a 40 mm case produced by Ervin Piquerez S.A.—better known for its “compressor” cases. This clever construction was designed to improve water resistance, using increasing external pressure to further compress the case gaskets. In other words, the deeper you went, the tighter it sealed—a beautiful piece of engineering from the era. The case remains in great condition and is fitted with a finely toothed rotating bezel, which has developed a subtle fade towards a soft blue hue—adding just the right amount of character. Its reverse panda dial offers a wonderful contrast, with two sub-dials set against a black background. The crisp white chronograph seconds hand adds a touch of sportiness, while the lume has aged to a warm yellow tone, giving the watch a balanced and harmonious appearance.The watch is fitted by one of our Bulang and sons leather straps of which we think as a nice match .
