Antique Thonet Bentwood Beech Hat & Coat Stand | Circa 1900

A superb antique bentwood beech hat and coat stand closely following the celebrated designs of Gebrüder Thonet. Constructed from dark stained beech, the stand has an elegant central fluted column supported upon four swept bentwood legs. The upper section is of a particularly elaborate arrangement terminating in 8 scrolling hat and 8 coat hooks. The construction beautifully demonstrates the bentwood technique pioneered and industrialised by Michael Thonet and subsequently adopted by a number of important Central European manufacturers during the later 19th century. A wonderfully sculptural piece of late 19th-century bentwood furniture which remains entirely practical as a hall stand, hat stand or coat rack.
