Gold Dust Geophagus 6-7CM
Gold Dust Geophagus The aquarium should be roomy, featuring a soft sand substrate since these fish enjoy sifting through it occasionally while searching for food. Ensure there are ample hiding spots among tangled driftwood, rocky caves, and sturdy plants integrated into the decor (like Anubias sp. or Java Fern). Plants placed in the substrate are likely to be uprooted, so it’s best to avoid them. Filtration must be effective, providing areas with moderate water flow as well as some calmer spots for resting away from the current. Regular partial water changes will help maintain low nitrate levels, which is crucial since this species is sensitive to poor water conditions. These eartheaters are generally semi-aggressive and should be kept in a multi-male (three or more) mixed-sex group in larger tanks, or as a single male with several females in smaller setups. Males will often compete with other males, especially when they are ready to spawn. Careful selection of tankmates is essential, steering clear of small fish; suitable companions might include other South American cichlids of similar size and temperament, deep-bodied tetras, Loricariids (suckermouth catfish), and larger Brochis catfish. Even though it currently holds a scientific classification, this cichlid doesn’t share many characteristics with true eartheaters. Along with the rest of the Red hump group (steindachneri, pellegrini, crassilabrus, and several other undescribed species), it is highly probable that it will eventually be reclassified from the Geophagus genus.
