Trained within this family workshop rather than through strict academic channels, he developed a lasting disdain for the high-minded seriousness of official French art. He specialized in military scenes depicting French soldiers in an informal, vernacular manner, and in Orientalist subjects drawn from his travels in North Africa, working with a productivity that made him one of the most popular painters of the July Monarchy.
