Heather

Calluna vulgaris (heather) is an evergreen, low-growing subshrub perfect for Willamette Valley gardens, forming neat mounds 6-24" tall with tiny scale-like leaves and abundant late-summer to fall blooms in pink, purple, red or white. Plant in acidic, well-drained, humus- or peat-rich soil in full sun to light afternoon shade—tolerant of the Valley's cool, wet winters—keep evenly moist but not waterlogged, prune after flowering to maintain a compact habit, and use in borders, rock gardens or containers.
