Pair of Murano Due in Sheer White and Cobalt Blue Wall Sconces Attributed to Frederico De Majo
Pair of Murano Due in Sheer White and Cobalt Blue Wall Sconces With original stickers to the side Italy circa 1980 Attributed to Frederico De Majo The applique of sculptural and decidedly Postmodern conception, the principal element a broad upward-facing funnel or cone shade in satin-finish white lattimo glass — its rim defined by a fine cobalt blue edge — from which issue five arching stems in clear hand-blown glass, each curving upward, outward, and then downward in a generous parabolic loop, terminating at its nadir in a solid applied sphere of deep cobalt (blu cobalto) glass. The arches graduate subtly in height, creating a rhythmic fan-like deployment around the central diffuser. The whole is wall-mounted on a small brass fitting, the Murano Due manufacturer's label visible to the reverse. The interplay between the satin white cone, the crystal clarity of the arching glass rods, and the intense cobalt of the terminal spheres produces a composition of considerable wit and decorative authority, engaging both with the formal vocabulary of Venetian glassmaking tradition and with the irreverent energy of Italian Post-Modern design. The sconce is a product of Murano Due, the Venetian lighting manufactory that collaborated throughout the 1980s and 1990s with some of the most significant designers working in Murano glass, including Federico De Majo, Carlo Nason, and Michele Sbrogiò. Murano Due wall lights designed by Federico De Majo in 1980 are documented as characteristically balancing structural form with a soft, sculptural elegance, and achieving a compelling contrast between delicate glass elements and bold form. Murano Due's 1980s production is closely associated with the vibrant aesthetic of Postmodern Italian design, employing cobalt blue and vivid coloured glass to create pieces that function as captivating works of wall art even when unlit. The arching glass rod format with cobalt ball terminals is among the more architecturally inventive of the firm's documented sconce types
