Honeylocust Tree - Gleditsia
Honeylocust trees (Gleditsia triacanthos) thrive in Southwestern Ontario, where they are native to the Lake Erie region. Fast-growing and highly adaptable, they excel in urban landscapes and tolerate salt, drought, and heavy clay soils with ease. Plant in full sun for best results. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots; once mature, they are drought-tolerant but prefer moist, well-drained soil. Choose thornless, podless cultivars such as 'Sunburst' or 'Imperial' to avoid large thorns and messy seed pods. Prune in late fall or early spring to remove crossing branches and maintain structure—their wood can be brittle and prone to storm damage. Newly planted trees benefit from balanced fertilizer. Hardy in Ontario, though severe winter temperatures below -30°C may cause damage. Note that honeylocusts are among the first trees to drop leaves in fall.
