2022 Rocher-Figeac St. Emilion
The terms Bordeaux and Value may not often be synonymous these days, but this is an excellent buy we’ve recently discovered from a lesser-known winery with a great story. Château Rocher-Figeac has a history dating back to 1880, founded by M. Rocher, a relative of the current owners, the Tournier family. As the name suggests, the vineyards are located in Figeac on the west side of the famed vineyards of St-Émilion, and the property is adjacent to the famed Château Figeac, which is a Grand Cru Classé vineyard. The same family also owns Château Rocher-Bonregard in Pomerol, where they produce excellent wines. This wine comes from the excellent 2022 vintage and is predominantly Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged for 6 months in a barrel prior to release. The Rocher-Figeac is delicious now (especially with a nicely seared steak or hearty fare from the grill), but will also age gracefully for 5 - 10 years or more if you feel like laying down a bottle in the cellar.
