Sorrenberg Gamay 2025
The Wine The style of Gamay we produce is a combination of traditional Gamay techniques. There is 10% Pinot Noir used in the blend. Half of the Gamay was cold macerated where the fruit is picked cold, crushed and left to soak for 4 days before fermentation starts. 10- 20% of the fruit is left whole in all ferment. Fermentation with natural yeast is for 2 weeks on skins, after which the wine is pressed and matured in oak for eleven months. The 2025 vintage had below average rainfall for winter. Spring budburst was around average timing with a couple of frost events, but no damage. Post-flowering we had 120mm rainfall. Good weather conditions Dec – end of Jan although dry, there were still some cooler periods. The dry continued through ripening, with one more significant rain event at the end of Feb. Disease pressure was very low with good ripening conditions. Fruit was flavoursome with good yields across the varieties. Sorrenberg Notes on 2024 Vintage Gamay: The bouquet of the 2024 Gamay shows cherry and plum with some earthy undertones. The aromas follow onto the palate combining with integrated acid and refined tannins which create a very well-balanced wine, finishing with great length. The Details Variety - Gamay Country - Australia Region - Victoria Sub Region - Beechworth Extra - Cork Year - 2025 Volume - 750ml About the Wine Maker Sorrenberg Vineyard was established in 1984 by Barry and Jan Morey and situated on the outskirts of Beechworth. It is surrounded by forest on two sides and Stony Creek runs across the back boundary. It is a 3 hectare vineyard at an elevation of 560 meters set mainly on granite rock with a sandy loam, which does have the advantage of being on the border where the granite meets the red mudstone, giving the soil greater water holding capacity. The finesse and elegance of Sorrenberg wines can be attributed to the fact that it is one of the highest vineyards on granite soil in the Beechworth region. The varieties grown are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Gris and Merlot.
