Ancient map of Ghent, 1575
Bird's-Eye View of Ghent is a remarkable Renaissance city view depicting the historic city of Ghent at the height of its commercial and political significance in the sixteenth century. Created by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, the engraving was published in 1575 as part of the celebrated Civitates Orbis Terrarum, widely regarded as the first comprehensive atlas of cities in the world. Presented from an elevated bird’s-eye perspective, the view offers a detailed and expansive representation of Ghent, one of the largest and wealthiest cities in northern Europe during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The composition reveals the intricate network of waterways, canals, bridges, streets, churches, monasteries, defensive walls, and public buildings that defined the city’s urban landscape. Ghent’s strategic location at the confluence of the Scheldt and Lys rivers contributed significantly to its economic prosperity, and these waterways are prominently featured throughout the engraving. Particular attention is given to the city’s impressive Gothic architecture, including the towering churches and civic structures that dominated the skyline. Landmarks such as Saint Bavo's Cathedral and the medieval fortress Gravensteen Castle emphasize Ghent’s importance as both a religious and political center. The dense concentration of buildings illustrates the city's thriving textile industry and its role as a major trading hub within the Low Countries. Like many views in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the engraving combines cartographic accuracy with artistic refinement. Fine linework, carefully rendered architectural details, and lively surrounding landscapes transform the city view into both a geographical document and a work of art.
