Victorian 15ct Gold REGARD Ring
There is something wonderfully romantic about a REGARD ring. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these sentimental jewels used the first letter of each gemstone to spell a hidden message. In this case, Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby and Diamond combine to spell the word "REGARD". It is a token of affection, admiration and enduring love. Although dating from the 1870s, this ring looks back to an earlier age. Its design is heavily inspired by the colourful closed-back gemstone rings of the Regency and early nineteenth century, with decorative gold detailing and a rich combination of gemstones creating a jewel that feels both vibrant and deeply romantic. It is set and hallmarked in 15ct gold, a uniquely British standard introduced in 1854, the ring retains its closed-back settings, a feature that had largely disappeared from fashionable jewellery by the late Victorian period. The gemstones glow beautifully within their settings, creating the rich colours so admired by nineteenth-century jewellers. The diamond appears to be a later replacement, almost certainly fitted during the ring's long lifetime. Rather than detracting from the piece, it serves as a reminder that treasured jewels were worn, loved and cared for by successive generations. A charming and highly collectable example of Victorian sentimental jewellery, carrying both a hidden message and a fascinating nod to the designs of an earlier era.
