Chai Doré Armagnac Marres Collection 1976/2025 49yo 47,5% cask #9 The Virtues - Patience, Robert Bauer and Distilia
Coming soon... The Virtues – Patience | Chai Doré Armagnac 1976 "Each, as his back was laden, came in deed or more or less contract; but it appear'd as he, who show'd most patience in his look, wailing exclaim'd: 'I can endure no more." DANTE – PURGATORIO, CANTO 10 The fifth chapter in The Virtues series continues Distilia's collaboration with Robert Bauer, following the acclaimed releases of Charity, Kindness, Diligence, and Chastity. This time, the spotlight falls on one of the rarest treasures of Gascony: an extraordinary 49-year-old Armagnac from the historic Marres Collection, bottled under the virtue of Patience. Distilled in 1976 in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, this remarkable spirit spent nearly half a century resting in a single French oak cask (#9). Crafted from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc grapes and distilled in a traditional Alambic Armagnacais, it slowly evolved through decades of quiet maturation, transforming youthful eaux-de-vie into a spirit of exceptional depth, harmony, and elegance. Bottled in June 2025 at its natural strength of 47.5% ABV, without additives or manipulation, Patience embodies everything that makes great Armagnac unique: the marriage of fruit, oak, time, and human dedication. Only 215 bottles were produced, making this a highly limited expression and a fitting tribute to one of the most overlooked yet rewarding virtues. Nearly fifty years of maturation cannot be rushed. Every season, every change in temperature, every silent year in the cellar contributed to the creation of this singular spirit. Patience reminds us that some of life's greatest rewards arrive only after decades of waiting. The golden cellar of Monsieur Marres, a collector of precious treasures, who saved a few rare casks from befriended small Armagnac farmers. Poured into the glass, the Armagnac truly glows with golden brilliance, while a warming fragrance of tropical fruits fills the room. Dried mangoes and sweet-sour passion fruits vibrate with summer, while fermented apricots, physalis, and rhubarb send a familiar greeting from the Gascony. On the palate, a highly complex interplay of sweetness, tropical acidity, and fine bitter notes caresses the senses, settling on the tongue with an oily texture. The crowning glory of five decades of patience lies in the finish, where tropical fruits, vegetal notes, and refined chocolate unite in a brilliant final chord. We dedicate this virtue to all the patient, loving parents who, in the storm of everyday life, preserve their sense for the beauty of family and life.
