Sashiko Decorative Mat [B]
This decorative mat is entirely covered with meticulous sashiko stitching on vintage Japanese textile. The motif is ganze-zashi (also known as uni-zashi) from Tobishima, Yamagata. The stitching was done in undyed thread and then overdyed with aizome (traditional Japanese natural indigo), allowing the pattern to settle softly into the fabric. Compared to stitching with indigo-dyed thread, this process gives a more integrated and gentle appearance. The reverse side features plain vintage textiles in two tones, accented with small mending stitches. The result has a texture and depth reminiscent of aged textiles, giving it a quiet, timeworn character. Each piece is one of a kind and completely handmade. Created by ITOTSUZURI, it reflects a thoughtful and enduring approach to making. It can be used as a table mat or displayed as a textile piece on the wall.
