Large Aleut Open Weave Carrying Basket

This is a good example of the Aleut carrying basket with its fine open weave and thick braided rim. The basket itself is in excellent condition without any breaks. It at one time had narrow bands of red and blue wool wrapped around the weft for about 2" below the rim, but those pesky moths ate most of the wool. There are enough remnants of the wool to give a sense of the original coloring. This is a large basket which has no breaks or splits in the weaving which is unusual for these large delicate baskets. It reads well and will be a good basket to own and enjoy. H. 8"; D. 11" c.1900-1910 #9088
