COBI P-51D Mustang Top Gun Set 5847A

COBI's P-51D Mustang Top Gun is built from 150 blocks in the markings of the Mustang seen in Top Gun: Maverick, under the official film license. All markings are printed onto the blocks. Strictly speaking, not a P-51D The Mustang in Maverick's hangar belongs to Tom Cruise, and it has a more unusual history than its film role suggests. It was not built as a standard fighter at all. It left North American Aviation's plant in Dallas in 1944 as an F-6K, a photo-reconnaissance version with two K-24 cameras mounted in the rear fuselage, one pointing straight down and one to the side. Dallas-built Mustangs also differed in a detail most people never notice: they flew with an 11-foot Aeroproducts propeller instead of the Hamilton Standard propeller of the Inglewood-built P-51Ds. Delivered to the Army Air Forces with the serial number 44-12840, the aircraft has no reliable record of wartime use. In 1946 it was handed to the Civil Air Patrol, then passed through private owners and a long restoration in the 1980s, which is when it received its civil registration, N51EW. Cruise bought it in 2001 and flies it himself.
