Antique 27-Door Post Office Box Cabinet

A wonderful survivor from the early 20th century, this antique postal box cabinet combines the practical design of a working post office with more than a century's worth of character. Standing just over four feet tall and measuring only 12 inches wide, the cabinet features 27 individual postal boxes arranged in three columns. Each has its original metal door, individual lock and glass window, with remnants of colourful numbering still visible on many of the panes. The weathered blue-grey finish, worn metal surfaces, exposed rivets and substantial hinges give the cabinet a remarkable patina. All 27 glass panels are intact, a particularly appealing feature of this well-used piece. The wooden cabinet retains its original open-back construction, allowing a glimpse into the way mail was once distributed from behind the postal counter. Perforated metal shelves and wooden dividers add further industrial character. Marked "PAT'D 1904" along the upper front edge, the cabinet is believed to date from the early 20th century. A surviving paper label bearing what appears to be the name Frank Carney offers a small reminder of its former working life. A compelling decorative piece for a residential interior, retail setting or hospitality space. Equally appealing to collectors of postal memorabilia and those drawn to authentic industrial antiques. Condition Original as-found finish, carefully cleaned while preserving the patina and evidence of age. Surface oxidation, paint loss, wear and imperfections throughout, including damage to an upper corner of the wooden cabinet. All 27 glass panels are intact. No keys are available, and the doors appear to be locked. Lock operation has not been tested.
