Repeating an idea can feel like making it stronger to a 2nd or 3rd grader. To a reader, it’s just extra words. This Cut the Clutter unit is a set of revision mini-lessons that teaches 2nd- and 3rd-graders to reduce wordiness in opinion and informational writing. Students learn four named ways to cut the clutter (cut repeated ideas, cut filler words, cut announcing sentences, and shrink wordy phrases) and practice saying the same thing in fewer words. This print-and-teach resource is designed to fit inside your existing writing lessons. It teaches one revision move, cutting the clutter so writing is clear, so you can teach it as a short sequence and then use it whenever students revise their own drafts. All passages focus on real-world economics, like needs and wants and saving money, so your writing block builds social studies content knowledge at the same time! How the lessons work In each genre, students begin with an exploration lesson. They look at two versions of the same passage, one with extra words and one without, and name what changed. Then three activities move from most supported to most independent: Activity 1, Choose the Cleaner Version: Students read a passage with the cluttered parts marked and pick between two fixes for each. One cuts the extra words and keeps the meaning. The other cuts too much. Then they explain their choice. Activity 2, Name the Clutter, Then Cut It: Students label which of the four types each cluttered part is, then write each sentence the clean way. Activity 3, Find and Cut The Clutter: Students read a full passage, find the clutter on their own, and cut it, shrinking wordy phrases where needed. Samples come with every activity in both genres. The sample explanations show the thinking behind a strong answer, so students can see how to cut extra words without losing what the reader needs. What’s included Teacher guide Cut the Clutter strategy poster, in black-and-white and color Shrink Wordy Phrases reference sheet Before You Publish checklist Revision rubric Exploration lessons for opinion and informational writing Three application activities for each genre Samples for all activities in both genres Why teach revision with models Telling students to “make it better” doesn’t give them anything to act on. A named strategy paired with side-by-side models of weak and strong writing does. Students see the difference, name the technique, and practice it across three activities, so the skill has a chance to carry into their own writing. Part of the Write On! series This resource uses the same exploration and application framework as my Write On! Grammar Integration resources. Grammar builds sentence-level skills and revision builds craft-level moves, so the two series work well in the same writing block. You don’t need the grammar resources to use this one. It’s also one of eight strategies in the Write On! Revision Mini-Lessons Bundle, 2nd-3rd Grade. FAQ How do I teach 2nd and 3rd graders to cut unnecessary words? Give them names for the kinds of extra words to look for. This resource teaches four: repeated ideas, filler words, announcing sentences, and wordy phrases. Students practice spotting and cutting each one. How does this resource teach students to reduce wordiness? Students first compare a passage with extra words to a clean version of the same passage, and name what changed. They then choose between two fixes for marked clutter, label and rewrite cluttered sentences, and finally find and cut the clutter in a full passage on their own. Is this a full writing unit? No. It teaches one specific revision move (cutting the clutter) and is designed to be used inside your existing opinion and informational writing lessons. Do I need the Write On! Grammar resources to use this? No. The two series are designed to work together, but each one stands on its own. Please remember, this purchase is for the use of one teacher.
