Painted Wooden Door with Two Dragons and Jewel Bowl – Jamyang Dhatsang
On a deep green ground, two golden dragons face each other. Their scaled bodies are built up in gesso relief and framed by white fur, long whiskers, flames and legs banded in colour. Between them rises a lotus bowl holding jewels and two elephant tusks, wrapped in orange silk ribbons and crowned by a flaming jewel. Blue-green cloud scrolls fill the surface, and golden meander and cloud ornaments interlock in the corners. In Tibetan tradition the dragon (Druk) is associated with thunder, and the bowl full of jewels is regarded as an image of wealth and abundance. The panel was painted by Jamyang Dhatsang. At the age of twelve he entered a monastery in Tibet to become a thangka painter. For ten years he studied this traditional art there, and with it its iconography: how each deity is depicted, with which colours, attributes and proportions. Jamyang has been living in Switzerland with his family for several years. The painting is executed on an old wooden door, whose plank joints remain visible beneath the paint. 250 × 99 cm · approx. 40 kg · Painting with gesso relief on wood · Hand-painted by Jamyang Dhatsang Collection from our shop in Zurich is free of charge.
