A Greek Gold Ribbon Diadem, Hellenistic Period, ca. 2nd - 1st century BCE
An elegant gold ribbon diadem formed from a long, narrow band of hammered sheet gold of relatively uniform width. The upper and lower edges are decorated with finely stamped linear and beaded borders. The otherwise plain surface is embellished with two impressions of a linked double-spiral or S-scroll motif, consisting of circular elements with central punched dots joined by flowing, curved lines. The restrained decoration emphasizes the simplicity of the form and the rich golden surface. Narrow gold ribbon diadems were worn around the head in the Greek world, with examples also known from funerary contexts. The spiral motif, found throughout Greek decorative art and jewelry, was particularly well suited to stamped ornament on thin gold sheet. Medium: Gold Dimensions: Length: 15 3/4 inches (40 cm) Condition: Professionally rejoined and conserved from three pieces, with minor surface creasing, scattered scratches, small areas of deposits, and wear consistent with age. The stamped decoration and border details remain well preserved. Presented on a custom museum-quality display mount. Provenance: Sumer Gallery (Henry Anavian), New York City, acquired in the 1970s–1980s, and by descent to the family.
