The Things Kids Do; Flute Practice

School shirt, ink, threadHand stitched – The first exhibition I had at Timeless Textiles was called That’s My Baby… and was all about the things my kids did when they were babies and toddlers. I had to develop a different way of working for that exhibition since I now had small children and had to make work that I could stop and start to fit around family commitments. It was also the first time I made my sketches into sewn pieces. Both of these factors opened new doors for me. I’ve found that having limited time to work focusses my attention, and my kids have continued to pop in and out as subjects. The image I chose from That’s My Baby… was of my daughter drawing. 10 years on, I am still drawing my kids doing many things and often develop them into thread drawings. For Metamorphosis I have chosen to focus on the only common creative pursuits they share – playing the Flute. Even though they are so very different from one another, like chalk and cheese, at least this year they sit next to one another in the school band and are able to share these moments together. 32 x 32.5cm
