Agave sisalana 'Marginata' (Variegated)
The Agave sisalana 'Marginata' is the variegated form of sisal, the agave grown throughout the tropics for its strong leaf fibre, used for centuries to make ropes, twine, mats and sacks. Its wild origin is uncertain, probably in south-eastern Mexico, but the species is known almost only in cultivation and has become naturalized in many warm regions of the world. It forms a striking upright rosette of long, rigid, sword-shaped leaves, grey-green to bluish at the center and edged with broad bands of cream to pale yellow. Unlike most agaves, sisal leaves usually have smooth margins without teeth, while each leaf ends in a sharp dark terminal spine. The plant spreads by suckers at the base and, when it flowers on a very tall stalk, produces numerous small plantlets (bulbils) in place of seed. Long sword-shaped leaves with cream to yellow margins Smooth leaf edges, usually without marginal teeth Sharp terminal spine at each leaf tip Spreads by basal suckers and flower-stalk bulbils Bold, colorful accent for warm gardens and large pots Fast-growing and very drought tolerant, Agave sisalana 'Marginata' thrives in full sun and free-draining soil. It is frost tender, so in cold climates it is best grown in a large container and kept in a bright, frost-free place in winter, where its luminous variegation makes it a superb architectural plant. IMPORTANT: The pictures show the mother plant, which is not for sale. The offer includes a plant of the size selected.
