Vintage Mies De Wilde Sterling Silver Rooster Brooch with Amethyst and Citrine
A particularly playful and organically shaped brooch by Mies De Wilde, designed as a stylized rooster. Mies De Wilde (1932–2009) was an important Belgian goldsmith and one of the innovators of Belgian jewelry design from the 1950s onwards. His work was exhibited at Expo 58, among other events, and several of his jewelry pieces are now part of the DIVA collection in Antwerp. The rooster is depicted standing upright, with an elongated neck, a distinctive head and large, curved tail feathers. A round cabochon-cut amethyst forms a colorful accent at the head. A warm yellow, free-shaped citrine was set in the body. The free, flowing lines keep the depiction abstract, but the powerful tail, upright posture and pointed details make the rooster immediately recognizable. On the back, the brooch is signed with MDW, and bears the Belgian hallmark A925 and Mies De Wilde's tonneau-shaped maker's mark. The brooch is in very good vintage condition. The cabochons have been well preserved and the clasp functions well. The brooch pin is slightly bent, but this does not affect its function or wearability.
