About Splendid Mandarin The Splendid Mandarin, also known as the Mandarin Dragonet, is one of the most spectacularly coloured marine aquarium fish. Its body features an incredible combination of blue, green, orange, red and yellow markings, making it a standout addition to a mature reef aquarium. Despite its small size and peaceful nature, the Splendid Mandarin requires some specialist care. In the wild, it spends almost all of its time slowly moving across live rock and rubble while hunting tiny crustaceans and other microorganisms. Its primary natural food source is copepods and other small microfauna. For this reason, a mature aquarium with an established pod population is strongly recommended. Refugiums, live rock and areas of natural rockwork can help maintain a continuous food supply. Some specimens can be trained onto frozen or prepared foods, but this should never be assumed when purchasing a wild specimen. Captive-bred mandarins are generally a much better option for aquarists wanting a fish that accepts prepared foods. Splendid Mandarins are peaceful and reef safe, making them excellent additions to suitable reef aquariums. Their natural diet consists primarily of copepods, amphipods and other tiny crustaceans found amongst live rock and substrate. Does a Splendid Mandarin need a mature aquarium? Yes. A mature aquarium with an established population of copepods and other microfauna is strongly recommended. Can Splendid Mandarins eat frozen food? Some individuals can be trained onto frozen foods such as enriched brine shrimp and mysis. However, a reliable natural pod population is still highly beneficial. Are Splendid Mandarins reef safe? Yes. They are considered reef safe and generally leave corals and ornamental invertebrates alone. Can I keep two Splendid Mandarins together? Pairs can be kept in suitably sized aquariums, but males can be territorial towards one another. If keeping multiple specimens, a male and female pairing is preferable. Common Mistakes Adding one to a new aquarium New systems often don't have enough copepods to provide a reliable food source. Assuming it will eat pellets Some individuals accept prepared foods, but many rely heavily on natural live foods. Keeping too many pod-eating fish Wrasses, dragonets and other pod predators can quickly reduce the available food population. Not monitoring body condition A healthy Mandarin should have a well-rounded body. A pinched or sunken abdomen can indicate insufficient nutrition. Keeping it with aggressive feeders Mandarins are slow, deliberate feeders and can easily lose out to faster fish during feeding.
