Victorian Whitby Jet Necklace
DATE: Victorian, c.1860 An old, bold Victorian period necklace made up of striking Whitby jet. The piece features a large oval pendant drop (that looks like a locket!), and hangs freely from a faceted jet top that leads onto the interlinked chain that has a wearable length of 19 inches. Queen Victoria, was known for her strong influence on fashion and culture in England. During the long mourning period after the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, she wore only black attire and jewellery. Her gemstone of choice? Jet. Even though it was tied to "mourning", I think everyone can appreciate the allure of jet. STONES Whitby Jet MEASUREMENTS 19 inches wearable length Pendant: 4.7 x 3.6cm Width of chain: 1.2cm (approx.)
