Light, mobile and recurrent, it appears throughout human history as dwelling, shelter, ritual structure, military camp, festive canopy, emergency architecture and technical experiment – yet despite this persistence, it has remained at the margins of the discipline, treated as temporary, vernacular, ethnographic or merely functional. Rather than presenting the tent as a typology, this book considers it as a means of reading architecture differently. Through essays and conversations, the tent is followed across histories of nomadism, colonial classification, modernist abstraction, textile practice, gender and ecological thought – opening questions about the values through which architecture has come to recognize itself. The conversations are not appended as commentary, but form part of the book’s method. Exchanges with Yussef Agbo-Ola, Alessandro Petti and Sandi Hilal, Jane Rendell, Sumayya Vally, Hilde Heynen, Anna-Maria Meister and Johannes Offerhaus interrupt and extend the written arguments, keeping the inquiry open rather than resolved. Talking becomes a way of approaching architecture – attentive to forms of knowledge that do not always appear in drawings or monuments. Talking Tents considers the tent not as architecture’s opposite, but as a form through which the discipline's assumptions become visible, and through which other relations between body, material, climate and world may be imagined.
