Carolina Sandoval & Kengi: Beautiful Hummingbird Woodcarving
Carolina Sandoval and Kengi Santos, a married couple in their twenties, worked together to create this stunning carving of a hummingbird with beautifully detailed wings. In pre-Columbian Mexico, the hummingbird was significant beyond its small size, symbolizing renewal and serving as a messenger between the living and the dead. This small bird, carrying such deep meaning, is perfectly represented in this intricate carving. What stands out most is the craftsmanship of the wings. The inner surface of each wing is a rich green, while the outer side transitions to shades of orange and red, allowing the bird to appear to change color depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The head features a vibrant hot-pink crown patch and a large, gold-bordered eye, while the body displays scalloped feathers in coral and gray, leading down to yellow feet. The raised wing pose adds an extra level of detail that invites viewers to pick up the piece and rotate it slowly in their hands, revealing its beauty from every angle.
