Among the most charming of these was the sardine box, designed to present preserved fish with elegance rather than serving them directly from the tin—a small but meaningful gesture in an age that prized refined table manners. Discovered at market in northern England, we are delighted to present this Antique English Oak & Silverplate Sardine Box. In three pieces, the box comprises a footed oak and silverplate stand with delicate bead trim, a frosted glass liner, and an engraved silverplate cover adorned with an intricate finial. Rich in detail, the lush aesthetic of the box is embellished with geometric and botanical details dressing the lid. Crafted by the venerable Atkin Brothers of Sheffield, the firm's roots reach back to the mid-18th century, beginning with Thomas Law, whose silversmithing legacy passed through generations to Henry Atkin—an enterprising craftsman who partnered with John Oxley before founding his own firm. In 1853, Henry’s three sons—Harry Wright, Edward Thomas, and Frank Shaw Atkin—established Atkin Brothers, a name that would come to represent the height of Sheffield silver. Celebrated for their exquisite craftsmanship and innovative designs, the firm upheld the city’s proud silversmithing tradition well into the 20th century. Although created for serving sardines at luncheon, tea, or the supper table, this versatile vessel is equally well suited today for butter, preserves, olives, pickled vegetables, or other favorite accompaniments.
