GILDED LABDANUM

The top notes are a pungent trio of cumin, immortelle and honey, materials with the potential to obliterate all before them like a spiced resinous tsunami. Perfumer Nata Dyshliuk has been very circumspect in her use of these notes, using them to presage the seduction of the beautiful centre swelling underneath. Honey and beeswax are such a magnificent odour, one sweet and golden, suffused with pollen and the other a pheromonic imprint of old hives, bee wings and transmuted pollen. It is the heart of Gilded Labdanum that really makes this perfume so aurous and luminescent, a beauteous melding of ylang ylang, Rose de Mai, that sublime beeswax and a subtle veil of incense. This is where a sense of gilding begins to truly apply. Gilding is a remarkable skill, the application of whisper-thin sheets of 18k gold leaf onto size-prepared wood and then buffed to create a high shine, it is symbolic of the sun and holy light, used for hagiographic halos and stars on vaults of heavenly blue. Gilded Labdanum glows with an addictive pull as the perfume plunges into a base redolent with the fulcrum labdanum, resins, tactile balsams, woods and vanilla. The leathered, shrubby pungency of labdanum echoing the liquorice and garam masala tinted immortelle. Brooke’s passion for vintage perfumes is traced gently through the heart of rose, ylang and beeswax.
