Ceramic Wall Relief “Dietrich Buxtehude” – Stig Carlsson for JIE Gantofta, Sweden (c. 1960s)
A vintage Scandinavian ceramic wall plaque relief designed by Swedish artist Stig Carlsson for JIE Gantofta, Sweden, circa 1960s. The relief features a geometric and architectural composition inspired by the music of Baroque composer Dietrich Buxtehude, as indicated on the original label on the reverse. Executed in partially glazed stoneware with textured surfaces and carefully modelled forms, it reflects the sculptural approach characteristic of Scandinavian ceramic wall art from the period. The reverse bears the deep-stamped JIE factory mark, the impressed Stig Carlsson mark, and the original label. Stig Carlsson studied at Konstfack in Stockholm and trained under Gunnar Nylund at Rörstrand. He later worked as a designer at IFÖ and JIE Gantofta before establishing his own studio practice in the 1970s.
