Griselinia littoralis

Griselinia littoralis is a wonderfully dependable evergreen hedge plant, with glossy leaves that look fresh and clean all year. It’s a strong choice where you need screening along a boundary, or to create a sheltered “garden room” without waiting years for coverage. Griselinia littoralis forms a rounded, medium-to-large shrub and is widely used as an evergreen hedge because it clips neatly and thickens up well. It also sits happily in mixed borders as a background shrub, especially in informal gardens where you still want some structure. It looks smart with grasses and coastal-style planting, or alongside other evergreens for a layered screen. Plant it in sun or semi shade in most soils—chalk, clay, sand or loam—and it tolerates acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions. It’s very hardy and copes in exposed places, though it’s always happier with a bit of shelter from the harshest winds. Trim once or twice a year during the growing season to keep it dense, and it will stay tidy with minimal effort.
